                                                                                                 SEC Football

Ok, I know the college football season is over, and it really is a sore spot for a Vols fan, but I want to take this opportunity to say one thing; tale that every other conference in the nation! That’s the third year in a row the SEC has taken home the national championship. In the eleven BCS title games, five were SEC schools. The next closest conference is a tie between, the ACC, PAC 10, Big 10, Big 12, and the Big East, all with one. If that isn’t dominance, I don’t know what is.

Even with five championships, the SEC has a legitimate claim for even more. Seeing as the SEC is always in the hunt for a national title, my vote is for a playoff system in NCAA football because that guarantees an SEC title every single year. There’s not another conference out there that can pretend to compete with SEC dominance. They’re too fast, too strong, and with their PF Flyers on, they can jump higher. There is too much dedication and ferocity for anyone else to compare. My greatest complaint about the D-I system is the fact that numerous SEC schools get pushed aside because they aren’t undefeated or one loss. It isn’t fair to compare Ohio State to Georgia because Georgia plays Florida, Tennessee, South Carolina, and alternates with LSU, Alabama, and Auburn. Who does Ohio State play? Penn State? Michigan? Come on now, these teams are just as over-rated, but yet, year after year, Ohio state is in the hunt for a title. It must be nice to play JV teams all season, but I bet being taken out behind the tool shed in ’07 and ’08 was quite a wake-up call. To quote the great Muhammad Ali, “It’s like a good amateur fighting a real professional.”

It’s amusing that the only two conferences pleading for a playoff system are the SEC and Big 12. I’ll hand it to the Big 12 south, between Texas, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma, they have a decent bid to play in the big game. Although, Oklahoma is now 1-3 in the title match (all three losses to SEC schools). I can’t imagine a Pac 10 or Big 10 school ever petitioning for playoffs because they’d be exposed for how over-rated they truly are. Each year would come down to four SEC schools, two Big 12 schools, Utah (Nothing was more satisfying than watching the Utes lay it to Saban and the Tide. In my book, they’ve got a permanent spot in the playoffs), and Boise State.

I’d love to hear anyone question SEC dominance after this three-peat. I would say it won’t be like this forever, but it has been like this for too long to think it’s going to change anytime soon. So bring on the playoffs. Bring on all challengers. Let the best come try their hand at dethroning the Southeastern Conference. Try where Oklahoma, Ohio State, and Florida State all failed before. Now the football season is over, and I’m forced to watch a sport dominated by the ACC and the Big East (yawn). But don’t worry, 2009 kick-off is only 217 days away. ROCKY TOP! YOU’LL ALWAYS BE, HOME SWEET HOME TO ME! GOOD OLD ROCKY TOP, ROCKY TOP TENNESSEE
