Showing Up the MLB Mike DiPatri 12/04/06 This stuff is so silly I just have to address it instead of Major League Baseball. Even the champions of silly can?t come up with anything better than this one. That is Sunday's announcement that Florida, not Michigan would play OhioState in the National Championship game. Reaction to that announcement is the silliest thing we?ve seen since that to Kenny Rogers' dirty hand for one inning in the World Series. |
Turn on ESPN or read the Sports section in any newspaper this morning and it?s all you see. Everybody?s saying how NCAA football really screwed this one up. It's another indication of how flawed the BCS is. You have got to be kidding. Is the sporting world so dull this week that they have to make such a big deal over this? |
Let's take a look at how this decision came to be. Florida plays in the toughest conference in college football. And they won the title in that conference. Michigan did not win its conference. Its conference this year was really substandard. Yes, they lost only to OhioState. Florida's BCS average was higher than Michigan. The computer had them tied. Both the Harris poll and Coaches? poll had Florida ahead. The voters in these polls did not all live in Gainesville, you know. They came from all over the country. Even the ESPN analysts agreed that Florida should be there. Michigan could not beat that number one team, so let another team try. Maybe Florida will. The Gators earned their way there by playing the toughest schedule in the country and winning its conference. |
