If There Were no Red Sox
Mike DiPatri 6/5/08
Just think what the sports world would be if there were no Red Sox. You’d have think…
ESPN would change its format to NFL only or go out of business. ESPN has adopted the Red Sox as its golden boys. As we watch ESPN it seems that the only Major League Baseball team plays in Boston. ESPN might have to report a ten game winning streak in Cleveland or somewhere if they couldn’t report a three game streakinBoston instead.
Baseball analysts and broadcasters would have to anoint another team as the greatest baseball team in history. The Red Sox have won two World Series in 88 years. That’s not very impressive; in fact it’s not even respectable. Think about it, the Marlins have done that in the past 10 years! Announcers broadcasting games would actually have to talk about the teams playing in THAT game.
Umpires would have to think when making close calls in Red Sox games. Now close calls automatically go the Red Sox way.
An entire “Nation” would not have entertained us for so long with constant whining and making excuses for losing. We would have never heard of that curse nonsense.
People in Boston would not have to pay the highest ticket prices in the league to see a baseball game.
Would any other team allow Manny to continue to insult the game the way he does now?
There would be no fans anywhere as arrogant as those in Boston. Fans of other teams understand that if their teams were such failures as the Red Sox, there’d be no call for arrogance.
Networks would have to televise some of the other teams’ games. Does some guy in Boston schedule televised baseball games?
So, the world of Major League Baseball would be radically different if there were no Red Sox. Other teams would have to learn to live with a little attention. Truly successful teams would find themselves covered in the paper and on TV. With equal coverage of all big league teams, baseball might become as popular as football.
